New to the field of medical writing?

Making the conversion from the lab to the world of professional medical writing can be a challenge. Here are some tips:

What we look for

• Advanced or terminal life sciences–related degree

• Authorship of clinically oriented peer-reviewed manuscripts, posters,
  and abstracts

• Experience working in a medical communication agency or the
   pharmaceutical industry

Steps to help you get there

• Read…lots. Read peer-reviewed manuscripts that have a clinical focus in
   therapeutic areas you know. Read as much for structure and style as for
   content.

• Write…lots. Even if your course of study or lab doesn’t readily allow you to
   write scientific manuscripts, find ways to create opportunities for yourself.
   Be creative.

• Learn…lots. Learn about this industry. Look at websites of medical
   communication companies. Join the International Society for Medical
   Publication Professionals (ISMPP), the American Medical Writers
   Association (AMWA), or similar professional groups and learn what
   they do, how they do it, and how you can contribute.
